ODD 2022: iSoftStone's Migration and Tuning Practices Using openEuler Based on Kunpeng DevKit

2022.04.20

openEuler Developer Day 2022 (ODD 2022) on the theme of "create the future with a more fascinating openEuler" was openEuler Developer Day 2022 (ODD 2022) on the theme of "create the future with a more fascinating openEuler" was held online from April 13 to 15. The summit is intended to promote the technological research and innovation of openEuler in four scenarios: server, cloud computing, edge computing, and embedded computing. It saw the official release of the all-scenario and long-cycle version of openEuler 22.03, and a showcase of collaborative creative achievements and commercial cases in multiple industries. As a co-founder of the openEuler community and co-organizer of this summit, iSoftStone contributed to the organization of the summit and shared the speech titled "iSoftStone's Migration and Tuning Practices Using openEuler Based on Kunpeng DevKit".

Higher efficiency: the number of man-days required to migrate NAMD software is reduced from 27 to 2.

NAnoscale Molecular Dynamics (NAMD) is a parallel molecular dynamics code used to fast simulate large systems on massively parallel computers. With strong parallel computing capability, it has been implemented on thousands of processors.

By scanning NAMD source code using Kunpeng DevKit2.0 code migration tool, iSoftStone quickly identified architecture-related dependent files and source files to be migrated. Following the migration suggestions, the NAMD software was migrated from x86 to Kunpeng +openEuler platform, with the number of man-days required cut from the originally envisaged 27 to 2.

Higher performance: NAMD performance was improved by 4.73%

After a successful and efficient migration, iSoftStone used Kunpeng DevKit2.0 performance analysis tool to analyze NAMD software performance and discovered high CPU single usage. The CPU prefetch switch was turned on as suggested to boost NAMD speed on the Kunpeng +openEuler platform by 4.73%, fully realizing the speed advantage.

As an important partner of Huawei, iSoftStone embraces the Kunpeng ecosystem strategy, actively engages in Kunpeng and openEuler ecosystem building, and contributes to the acceleration library, BoostKit ecosystem, open-source application empowerment, and openEuler base software with its advantages in digital technology. iSoftStone is a member of Kunpeng's "Common Wisdom Plan". In 2021, iSoftStone completed several ecosystem projects, migrated and tuned 10+ HPC open-source components of meteorology, genetics and other sectors from x86 to the Kunpeng platform, and was awarded Huawei "Kunpeng Common Wisdom Gold Quality Award"; it is a member of openEuler and openGauss communities and several SIG groups, and signed an enterprise CLA. iSoftStone is also an important member of Huawei Kunpeng Zhanchi Plan and Kunpeng Lingyun Partner Plan. It co-organized the "Operating System Industry Summit & openEuler Summit 2021" and shared Kunpeng +openEuler platform root technology, KAE acceleration, and other application practices with Huawei and other partners during the summit.

iSoftStone has provided practical training for 3,000+ students from 10+ universities, including Xi'an University of Science and Technology and Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications in the forms of textbook compilation, teacher training, and talent development; held Kunpeng talent training programs with universities like Sias University; and provided internship opportunities to talented students to support the "Talent Plan".

Being an open-source server OS, openEuler is an essential milestone in China's homegrown system development. In line with the Kunpeng ecosystem strategy, iSoftStone will further build one-stop openEuler service capabilities with its advanced technology and reliable service, which will help openEuler develop and flourish in many industries. The ongoing investments and contributions of iSoftStone to openEuler aid in the transition to China's homegrown OSs and the implementation of the national digital infrastructure localization strategy.
